Stipends during study breaks

Agree the payment arrangements when applying for a study break and record them on RD7. Approval to pause registration does not by itself tell you whether you will be paid.

Reason for breakRelevant provision
Certified illnessIllness and medical leave: up to 13 paid weeks within 12 months, additional to the standard studentship described
Maternity/adoption/family leaveFamily and compassionate leave: specific paid and unpaid periods
Other reasonsNormally payments stop; School discretion is described, including for very short breaks

For ordinary non-medical/non-family breaks, whether or not payments temporarily stop, the total number of payments stays the same. Do not describe those payments as extra funding. Medical/maternity additional-payment provisions are distinct.

§5.4 also contains a broad statement of no stipend/fee entitlement during leave except medical/family leave, alongside its discretion language. Confirm the actual authorised arrangement in writing, especially with an external funder. See Source differences and clarifications.

The DoS handles authorised payment changes; the timing and responsibilities are explained in Studentships and stipends. Ordinary holiday leave does not extend funding.
