Teaching and the Student Experience Contract
University teaching, demonstrating and research work should be properly authorised, contracted and paid. Begin with your Director of Studies.
Before starting work
- Obtain DoS agreement and check hours, funding and visa conditions.
- Initiate the Student Experience Contract and associated staffing-authorisation/appointment paperwork through the School.
- Arrange the required right-to-work check before work with peopleteam@napier.ac.uk.
- Complete the initial four-hour New to Teaching in Higher Education course before teaching; the framework also explicitly requires training before teaching/demonstrating work.
The framework says to initiate the contract before the course and that approval follows completion. Active course attendance is paid at Demonstrator level under the contract. Ask the School how enrolment, contract approval and payment will be coordinated.
What training includes
An online survival-skills session and in-person microteaching. Three further voluntary workshops cover areas including assessment, feedback and reflective practice, with peer discussion and introduction to ENRoute/Associate Fellowship.
The DoS functions as line manager for paid activities and monitors development and study impact, liaising with module/project leaders. Suitable work depends on genuine opportunities in your area; it is not guaranteed.
