Extending maximum registration

An RD10 extension adds time beyond your maximum registration end date and is only for exceptional circumstances. It is different from RD19 and RD18.

Conflicting official notice periods

Regulation D5.5 requires application at least three months before the existing maximum end date. Framework §5.6 says before that date, while §5.4 normally discusses extensions in the final three months. Start well in advance of the three-month point and obtain written timetable advice from the Operations Team. Do not assume a final-month application will be accepted.

What the application needs

  • RD10 and School RDC support.
  • Relevant documentary evidence.
  • Detailed progress summary.
  • Detailed completion timetable.
  • DoS statement explaining and supporting why exceptional further time is needed.

Submit for Research Degrees Examination Board consideration through the Operations Team. Committee meeting and paper deadlines matter. Approval brings another writing-up fee.

Grounds

Examples include sudden serious illness/injury, bereavement or sudden chronic illness of someone close, severe personal/financial/domestic crises, unexpected employment responsibilities and unplanned family/caring/service obligations.

Ordinary planned events, individual IT loss/failure and the loss of University access due to debt are not accepted in themselves. Waiting for supervisor feedback or making feedback revisions is not accepted as a reason for extending at grace end. Discuss the underlying circumstances promptly.

Where you can continue studying but with impaired/slower progress, §5.4 allows an exceptional early extension request rather than inappropriate suspension. This needs individual consideration, not an automatic entitlement.
