Progress concerns and withdrawal
Raise difficulties early so support can be discussed and recorded. The framework expects significant progress concerns to be evidenced through an ongoing process, not to appear without attempts at reasonable support.
Support and decisions
Use supervision and RD6 to discuss problems and actions. RD5 referral permits one repeat review within three months full-time/five part-time. A termination recommendation needs School RDC approval; the recommendation is not itself the final administrative withdrawal.
If you want to leave
Discuss with your IPC/DoS/team. Consider whether a break, mode change or different award could be relevant, without assuming any is automatically available.
If you definitely decide to withdraw, formally notify the School/Doctoral College using RD9. The IPC oversees the process, ensures completion/submission and should conduct an exit interview where possible. The Operations Team updates records and formally confirms withdrawal.
Other withdrawal circumstances
- Unsatisfactory progress ratified by School RDC: RD9 is still required alongside review paperwork.
- Loss of contact: the IPC/DoS must give formal written warning at least four weeks before the SRDC meeting considering withdrawal. Regulation D5.6 separately describes a one-month opportunity to re-establish contact. Respond promptly and seek support if contact is difficult.
- Conduct: separate University procedures apply.
If funded, the DoS arranges the stipend-stopper; payments after the effective withdrawal date may be reclaimed. Visa implications require specialist advice. See Complaints, appeals and conduct for challenging a decision.
