Registration and study commitment
All research students must register. Full-time study averages 36 hours a week; part-time study averages 21 hours. Agree how those hours fit your circumstances and research with your supervisors.
Initial and annual registration
Initial registration checks your University record and collects additional information. Your welcome message explains the process. Some services may remain unavailable until it is complete. Student Route visa holders in the UK must attend in person to confirm visa details.
Subject to satisfactory progress, continuing students are automatically registered annually on School authorisation. The Doctoral College Operations Team manages the process with the Academic and Student Lifecycle team. Tuition-fee liability arises at first registration and annually thereafter.
Agree attendance and engagement
Record arrangements in your Supervision agreement. Keep regular contact with your supervisors. Visa holders also have specific engagement-monitoring requirements; ask for the guidance supplied to the supervisory team at registration.
Another course at the same time?
The framework normally prohibits simultaneous registration for another award. It lists exceptions for recognised joint supervision, a completed programme awaiting graduation, specified GTA/research-methods certificates, and an SRDL-approved short course supporting your research.
Confirm permission before enrolling
Regulation D4.2 separately requires specific permission from the RDEB Convenor for another award. Ask the School and Operations Team to confirm the approval route; a framework exception is not a blanket permission. See Source differences and clarifications.
